How a real Formula 1 start works
Every Grand Prix begins the same way. Five pairs of red lights hang above the start line. They come on one pair at a time, one second apart. When all five are lit, nothing happens for a moment — and nobody, not even the drivers, knows how long that moment will be. The race director holds the lights for a random length of time between 0.2 and 3 seconds, and then every light goes out at once. That is the start signal. Not a green light. Lights out.
The randomness is the whole point. If the gap between the last light and the start were fixed, drivers would launch on memorized rhythm instead of reacting, and the start would measure timing practice rather than reflexes. So the procedure is built to make anticipation a gamble. Move before the lights go out and you have jumped the start; in a real race that means a penalty. At the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas launched so close to the signal that the stewards investigated him for a jump start — and found the start was legal. A human being reacted quickly enough to be mistaken for a cheat.
This page recreates that procedure as faithfully as a browser allows. Five lights, one second apart. A random hold of 0.2 to 3 seconds. Lights out, and the clock runs until you click. You get five starts, and your score is the median.
Lights out is a different kind of signal
Our standard reaction test asks you to answer a colour that appears: red turns green, and green means go. The F1 start flips that. The signal is not something appearing — it is everything disappearing. Your eyes are fixed on five bright lights, and the cue is their absence.
The build-up changes how the wait feels, too. In the standard test the delay is a flat, shapeless 1.5 to 7 seconds. Here the delay has a structure you can watch: one light, two, three, four, five... and then the held breath before darkness. That countdown is exciting, and it is also a trap. Because you can see the sequence advancing, your body starts leaning on the rhythm, and the random hold at the end punishes exactly that. Most people find their first few starts are either cautious and slow or eager and void.
Both versions measure the same underlying thing — how fast you can turn one expected visual change into one movement. But they are not the same task, so we keep their records, their leaderboards and their history completely separate. A fair comparison needs the same test, and these are two tests.
What we will not tell you about F1 drivers
Sites that offer an F1-style reaction game usually decorate the result with a claim: that a Formula 1 driver reacts in some precise number of milliseconds, and that you have beaten or lost to that number. We looked for a published, citable source for those figures and could not verify one. So this page does not print one.
That is a rule across this whole site: numbers you can check, or no numbers at all. What we can tell you is verified and better than a made-up benchmark anyway — the start procedure you are playing is the real one, the 0.2-to-3-second random hold is the documented range, and a real driver's start was once fast enough to trigger a stewards' investigation. Whether your own start would survive that investigation is what this page measures.
The same honest rules as our standard test
Everything that keeps the standard reaction test honest applies here unchanged. A click before the lights go out is a jump start: the round is void and simply runs again, because a guess says nothing about your reflexes. A click within 100 ms of lights-out is voided too — light into the eye, signal through the brain, command down to the finger takes more than a tenth of a second, so nothing under that line can be a response to the signal. Athletics uses the same rule for false starts. Anything above 100 ms counts in full, however fast, because a machine cannot tell a sharp reaction from a lucky guess and we refuse to interrogate you about it.
The test also refuses to run in a hidden browser tab, where throttled timers would corrupt the measurement, and the lights switch off instantly with no fade, because a stimulus that eases out would smear its own timestamp. Your median, not your best fluke, is the score. Five starts is a small sample, but it is enough to make the number mean something.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the standard reaction time test?
Same measurement, different task. Both time one visual change to one click, and both apply the same 100 ms floor and median-of-five scoring. But the signal here is lights going out after a structured build-up, while the standard test is a colour appearing after a shapeless wait. Records are kept separately, and this variant is not part of the eight-test brain benchmark set.
Why was my start voided?
Two possibilities. If you clicked while any red light was still on, that is a jump start — you moved before the signal, which in a real race would earn a penalty. If you clicked after lights-out but under 100 ms, the click was physically too fast to be an answer to the signal, so it is treated the same way. Voided starts do not count toward anything; the start simply runs again.
Can I race a friend on the same starts?
Yes. Finish a run and use the challenge box on the result screen. Your link carries the exact hold times of your five starts, so your friend faces the identical sequence you did — one attempt, spent the moment they start.
Why is my time here different from the standard test?
Partly the task, partly you. Detecting lights going out is not identical to detecting a colour appearing, and the visible countdown changes how prepared your body is at the moment of the signal. Browser and device delay sit inside both numbers equally. Compare F1 starts with F1 starts, and your standard runs with standard runs.
